On Monday, May 19, NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown and the Amer-I-Can program, a program that Brown founded, joined the Texas Southern University family.

Working hand-in-hand with TSU's conditional summer academic program, a program designed for students who do not meet the soon to be phased admissions requirements, Amer-I-Can will help to prepare students for college-level coursework.

"A part of the academic program will consist of a new aspect," said Provost Douglas. "We have always provided academic skills…this year we are providing academic and motivational skills."

Douglas explained that the administration is encouraged by the Amer-I-Can program because of its ability to motivate student to attend college and succeed.

"When students live with improved academic skills and improved motivational skills, they have a better chance of leading a successful life," said Brown. "We are about change not charity…change is dedication to self."

Brown clarified the mission of Amer-I-Can by simply saying that he does not wish to remove the predator instinct from the young people who attend the program; he only wants to give them new prey: education engulfed with knowledge.

Brown has spoken with TSU President John Rudley to bring the program here to Houston permanently.

"I would like for TSU to be our outlet school," said Brown. "There is so much going on here at TSU. You all have a diverse law school and an aviation school that needs to be exposed for its talent… It's definitely time to partner with TSU."

The 'greatest' running back, as described by many football fans, went on to explain that "success is a journey, not a destination."

"We are depending on TSU to get the young people in the classroom, and we have a curriculum that will train them to take responsibility for their actions," said Brown.

Brown is proud of his football career, but explained that it is not who he is.
