Relationships - Distraction or not?
By Melissa Jackson

It has been said since day one, going all the way back to freshmen orientations that relationships are a major distraction for students in college. We were told specifically that it is best that we do not date because the obstacles would intervene with our studies since we are suppose to study at least fifteen hours a week or more. The question is just how true is that indication? How do you know or realize that the person you're dating is a distraction? For those of us who are not in a relationship, should we play it safe and continue to make our studies our main priority?
As college students and young adults, we can't help who we are attracted to and we refuse to dismiss the attraction, especially when the attraction is mutual. Some students come to college with the intentions of meeting someone that they could share their time and life with. Some students come to college with the expectations of just continuing their free spirited status; therefore partying is the only distraction on their agenda.
With that being known, that obviously means distractions are everywhere; the halls you walk, the tiger walk and all over campus. Everyone tends to get temporarily distracted every once in a while. But should your boyfriend/girlfriend consume your life?
For some people a relationship is a voluntary fulltime job. In order for it to be functional you must invest time, phone calls and several text messages. At times seems as if when you decide to be with someone you are basically pledging to dedicate and offer most of your time and concern to them.
But how much time is too much time? How often should I call? Am I on the verge of being a nuisance if I call more than 5 times a day? And what if I only talk to you once a day; does that mean I don't care?
How often should I be there for you? When your boyfriend/ girlfriend need to vent, you are one of their number one sources or you are their number one source. When they want to share some exciting news with someone, you are one of those people they want to talk to and share all of the details with. If things are going down hill for them, you are the first to know about it.
