It is a unanimous consensus "Texas Southern is open for business." On Monday, the Undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Jay M. Coher, met with President Rudley and U.S Congressman Green to discuss Texas Southern University's selection as a co-lead for the National Transportation Security Center of Excellence.
The Center is a companion to the Transportation studies program. The Center focuses on policies and operations in the transportation arena. Some of its research includes possible evacuations in case of events such as hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Centers provides simulations of events so that they may have open transportation routes if needed. With Houston being distinctively position for entrance and exit of hurricanes, the Center is essential to the state.
By building important relationships with key people at the Port of Houston, the county, state, and the national level, The Center hopes to become internationally known.
"Lets move forward," said Coher. "We are in a leadership position you must know that the world is coming to America." Coher went on to say,"We are looking at an international connection."
Inviting TSU to host a conference including government at all levels, industries and business partners, Coher, along with Congressman Green have identified 17 infrastructures that would be used as the subject matter for said conference.
"I am looking forward to seeing what will come out of the team work of Mr. Coher and president Rudley. Both men are leaders and understand what it takes to make this center the most outstanding," said Congressman Green.
Congressman Green went on to explain that it is his position to offer help when Rudley and Coher need a little assistance from Congress.
"I have no desire to have you hire certain people, I have no friends to reward, no enemies to punish," said Green. "Let me make is transpicuous. I will work with you and that means not trying to influence you."
Green made it as clear as possible that it is his desire that the Center of Excellence live up to its name.
"I was there at genesis and I want to be there at revelation," said Green.
As the men move from genesis to revelation they have decided to make communication imperative. All have conceded upon the fact that it is important to TSU that this is an enormous opportunity to showcase aptitude and propensity for excellence. It was made clear that the Center will let the country see what TSU can do when given the opportunity.
"Texas Southern is a winning institution," said Green.
