Rapper Bernard Freeman better known to the world as Bun B of UGK (the Underground Kings) was featured by the Student Government at Texas Southern University, Performing at the annual spring fest on April 18, Bun B made the University Program Council sponsored event memorable for many.
Performing everything from old school hits, like 'A Pocket Full of Stones,' to UGK's most recent hit, 'International Players Anthem;' Bun B excited the audience with a mini concert.
"It was beautiful," said Bun B. "You know there was so much love in the UGK crowd and it was pretty hot outside. With that being said, the people were with it so I was with it. We all sweated together."
Bun B views the spring fest as a good opportunity to give back to his fans and those who support him.
"One of my first concerts we ever did in UGK history was here at a spring fest. We just know how much support that the yard, 3rd ward and the university has for us and love to have for us. So it is always a good opportunity to come back and give that love back," said Freeman (Bun B).
Bun B's previous solo project Trill is definitely different from his new solo project II Trill.
"I think with this one we have got more of a set agenda. The last album we really tried to figure out exactly what it is we wanted to do. We didn't necessarily want to do a solo album but we kind of had to do one. With this one we knew what we were up against. We had a lot of ideas for what we wanted to do on this solo album. It was a lot easier thing to do," said Bun B.
Pimp C, a member of UGK, passed December 4, 2007 also had contributions on Bun B's II Trill album.
"Well most of the album was done by and to Pimp C. Like I said with a solo album it is a lot different. We have that much creative effort so it wasn't like we ran into any stumbling blocks. It is just the simple fact that we're going to have to go in and do this next album and that is going to be kind of strange to do," said Bun B.
Recognizing the talent that is out and was out in the past, Bun B reveals the type of artist he keeps in rotation.
"Well I definitely listen to a lot of old school like Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Cyprus Hill, Brand Nubian and stuff like that. Definitely Ghetto Boys and people like Big Mello. I also like the new school people like Lupe Fiasco, Bullet Proof Teflon, Violators, Crooked I etc. There is a lot of talent out," said Bun B.
Bun B believes that keeping God first, keeping the right company and knowing what it is that you want to do with your life is the way to guaranteed success.
"I would tell people to definitely keep God first and stay focus about what it is you want to be," said Bun B. "Make up a decision in your mind if you want to be rich or if you want to be famous or if you want to be both. There is different ways to get paid for each one. Make sure that the people who are around you are supposed to be around you."
