Dr. Cherry Ross Gooden is an "outstanding educator" with a name and face never to be forgotten.
A 1964 graduate of Texas Southern University, she earned her B.S. in Elementary Education and later earned her Master's in Elementary Education with a concentration in Reading from TSU.She later went on to earn her Doctorate of Education Degree in Educational Leadership and Cultural Studies, with a program emphasis in Multicultural Education, from the University of Houston.
Gooden is a dedicated and committed teacher with more than 40 years of teaching experience at both the elementary and university levels. She has been a consultant for various school districts in the state of Texas as well as throughout the nation.
Gooden currently serves as an Associate Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction in the College of Education
A TSU treasure, Gooden is a true Tiger in every sense of the word, giving back relentlessly by dedicating her expertise and touching countless lives at TSU. An "astounding orator", Gooden has spoken in many capacities on and off campus.
She is often invited to speak at many universities due to her extensive background in multicultural studies, noting her as an authority in multicultural citizenship. Her style is captivating and always thought provoking. She is a familiar face in the Fairchild building with her eye catching manicure and signature haircut as the former director of the GUAC program, current chairperson of Dark and the Second Mile Sophomore Retention Program. Both programs are dedicated in strengthening the overall success of a young students most critical years in college.
For many years she has been an intricate part of the "Dream Team" for the Miss Texas Southern University Pageant as well as a diligent chaperone for many reigning queens during their tenure.
Gooden is a member of many professional organizations including National Association for Multicultural Education (where she is also a founding member), Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education, International Reading Association, Concerned Educators of Black Children and the National Alliance of Black School Educators where she serves as Chair-Elect of the Higher Education Commission. She has also been active in community organizations such as Jack and Jill of America, National Women of Achievement, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, and Black Americans.
